AFL/AFLW have introduced many safety measures focused on supporting women who play Australian Rules Football. Mouthguards to prevent injuries to the teeth and face are strongly recommended at all levels of football but breast injury has always been poorly understood.
The Research
In 2020, the results of a breast injury survey were published.
Completed by 297 female Australian Football, Rugby League, Rugby Union (XVs) and Rugby 7s players, 57% of players reported experiencing a contact breast injury and 48% perceived that their injury impacted their football performance.
